Raymond Giddens Carey was born February 17, 1901, in Iola, Kansas. He received his bachelor's degree in 1923 from Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, and attended Hertford College of Oxford University, Oxford, England, from which he received a second bachelor's degree in 1927 and a master's degree in 1931. Everett Newton Pickel, born on 6 November 1860, was a clerk at Poley and Company's drug store in Boulder, Colorado, which was owned by Cyrus S. Poley. Pickel was assistant Sunday school superintendent at the Presbyterian church in Boulder. Further details about Everett Pickel and his relatives were noted by Professor Raymond G.
